Recruitment / Re: [Proofreader] laanibear
« on: January 18, 2018, 03:02 PM »
Thanks for applying.

With a few changes, I can likely pass you, but right now, there are a few too many mistakes remaining. You missed a few things in the first two parts and there were multiple errors in the script section. However, I think fine-combing your script again 2-3 times would resolve most of the grammatical errors, so I encourage you to do that and resubmit your test. The other thing I want you to pay attention to is rephrasing into natural English. Keep in mind these kids are in high school and there are some odd translations in there, so watch out for those. You fixed the "appeared out of the sky" line so I know you can catch more! Asking for clarification in a PR note is also okay and encouraged when meaning isn't clear from the translation. Good luck!

Hi SaltyPotato, thanks for your interest.

Unfortunately, I can't pass you as a PR right now. You did well in the first parts but there were multiple errors in the script section. One of the most difficult parts about proofreading is rephrasing into natural English speech in addition to checking for proper grammar. You're free to look over your script and make changes to try again if you'd like, but we do really need help on cleaning and typesetting too! Training is provided for those from scratch and we'd be happy to teach you if you're willing to learn.

Hey Cardes-sama,

Thanks for the interest! We're still in the process of putting together a new test, so we're just getting applicants to do a trial chapter instead. Since you have experience and follow Mahou Shoujo Ore, how would you feel about doing a chapter of that? It's a pretty tricky one, so just put notes beside lines if you're not sure or would like a second opinion.

Here's the link to some decent CH scans for chapter 9: http://dm.99manga.com/comic/24333/197934/?p=1&s=0

Recruitment / Re: PROOFREADER(AsaNe)
« on: November 11, 2017, 12:37 AM »
Hi AsaNe,

Thanks for applying!

You did pretty well on the first two sections and almost good enough for a pass on the script section. We want to deliver high quality scripts, so I'd like to see that you understand feedback and can apply it before I fully pass you.

-The biggest thing you missed grammar-wise is subject-pronoun agreement for each line as well as over multiple lines. Of course, make sure you're correcting grammar for each line, but also see that it carries over to the next part. (ie clothes & it).
-You've gotten most of the punctuation in the guidelines down, but make sure all lines end in proper English punctuation rather than Asian punctuation. Only one tilde if you're going to use one!
-Triple check for capitalization, spelling, punctuation and verb conjugation on all scripts!
-One of the most challenging parts of proofreading is rephrasing lines into natural English. Stylistically, these characters are high school kids so I encourage you think about how modern kids talk with your word choices.
-Make sure you understand every line and it makes sense in context. If there's anything off, make a PR note asking for clarification.

Let me know if you have any questions. Please post your revised script here when you're done.

Much better! You pass :)

It flows a lot better now that you've rephrased to high school speak. Good to see you can implement my feedback. Some of the harder, more abstract rewords will come with more experience  (ie wordy things like 'It sure is not easy stopping you' -> 'You sure are persistent' or 'I hate selfish people who do whatever they want' -> 'I hate people who use underhanded methods').

We'll continue discussions at your training thread below:

Hi Mizu,

Thanks for your interest. Since you've never had experience translating a manga series, please do the test. Unfortunately, the projects you've specified already have permanent translators (at least for the next while), but we still have a lot of other great series that need some TL love ^^

Hi MisoClementine,

Thanks for applying! I'm Chii, the PR and CH TL trainer. Is there a nickname you'd like to be addressed with or do you prefer MisoClementine as above?

You did pretty well on the first two sections and almost good enough for a pass on the script section. I'd like to see that you understand feedback and can apply it before I fully pass you though.

-The biggest thing you missed grammar-wise is subject-pronoun agreement across multiple lines. Of course, make sure you're correcting grammar for each line, but also see that it carries over to the next part. (ie clothes & it).
-You've gotten most of the punctuation in the guidelines down, but we only use em dashes at the end of a sentence when the character is getting interrupted or cut off abruptly. No normal dashes at the end either. If there's nobody interjecting, use ellipses or other punctuation.
-Triple check for spelling, punctuation and verb conjugation on all scripts!
-Especially since you can read the raws, I'd like you to choose more natural wording and phrasing as well as correct anything that was off. Stylistically, these characters are high school kids so I encourage you think about how modern kids talk when rephrasing.

Let me know if you have any questions. Please post your revised script here when you're done.

Natural English flow is an important part of a proofreader's job and not something you can completely pick up from just doing the standard training chapters here. I would recommend you watch more American shows and movies to absorb the nuances of everyday speech before you apply again. You might also benefit from reviewing grammar rules associated with run-on sentences, pronouns and verb conjugation. In the meantime though, the cleaning and typesetting positions are always open ^^

Thanks for waiting.

Nice job on the script. You pass! With a few more changes (and a round of PR from me), it'll be good enough to be the official script.

We'll continue with your training at the link below for 3 chapters until you get the hang of how things work here, and then you'll be promoted to official staff!

Hi,

Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately, I can't pass you as a PR as there were several errors in the spelling & grammar parts in addition to the script part. However, I'd really encourage you to apply as a cleaner or a typesetter. We have some great trainers that can teach you all the basics and more.
